Frank Turner says :

You’re not as messed up as you think you are
Your self-absorption makes you messier
Just settle down and you will feel a whole lot better
Deep down you’re just like everybody else

She’s not as pretty as she thinks she is
Just picture her after she’s had kids
I bet she sits at home and listens to The Smiths
Deep down she’s just like everybody else

So why are you sat at home?
You’re not designed to be alone
You just got used to saying “no”
So get up and get down and get outside
Cos it’s a lovely sunny day
But you hide yourself away
You’ve only got yourself to blame
Get up and get down and get outside

He’s not as clever as he likes to think
He’s just ambitious with his arguing
He’s crap at dancing, yeah and he can’t hold his drink
Deep down he’s just like everybody else

I’m not as awesome as this song makes out
I’m angry, underweight and sketching out
I’m building bonfires on my vanities and doubts
To get warm just like everybody else

So why are you sat at home?
You’re not designed to be alone
You just got used to saying “no”
So get up and get down and get outside
Cos it’s a lovely sunny day
But you hide yourself away
You’ve only got yourself to blame
Get up and get down and get outside

Amy thinks that life is lacking in drama
So she fell for horoscopes, faith-healing and karma
She’s so wrapped up in her invisible armour
She’ll never grow into herself
And it’s OK thinking me and all my friends are just wasters
But saying that I can still see through her heirs and graces
I bet she’s scared her life won’t leave any Caught up like everyone else

That’s not the point anyway
Oh darling, I felt compelled to call you up to say…
So why are you sat at home?
You’re not designed to be alone
You just got used to saying “no”
So get up and get down and get outside
Cos it’s a lovely sunny day
But you hide yourself away
You’ve only got yourself to blame
Get up and get down and get outside
Get up and get down and get outside

David Bowie Says :

Wake up you sleepy head
Put on some clothes, shake up your bed
Put another log on the fire for me
Ive made some breakfast and coffee
Look out my window what do I see
A crack in the sky and a hand reaching down to me
All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though they’re here to stay

What are we coming to
No room for me, no fun for you
I think about a world to come
Where the books were found by the golden ones
Written in pain, written in awe
By a puzzled man who questioned
What we were here for
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they’re here to stay

Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things)
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and papas insane
Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things)
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and papas insane
Let me make it plain
You gotta make way for the homo superior

Look at your children
See their faces in golden rays
Don’t kid yourself they belong to you
They’re the start of a coming race
The earth is a bitch
Weve finished our news
Homo sapiens have outgrown their use
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they’re here to stay

Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things)
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and papas insane
Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things)
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and papas insane
Let me make it plain
You gotta make way for the homo superior

Gorillaz say:

Up on melancholy hill
There’s a plastic tree
Are you here with me
Just looking out on the day
Of another dream

Well you can’t get what you want
But you can get me
So let’s set up and see
‘Cause you are my medicine
When you’re close to me
When you’re close to me

So call in the submarine
‘Round the world will go
Does anybody know
If we’re looking out on the day
Of another dream

If you can’t get what you want
Then you come with me

Up on melancholy hill
A manatee?
Just looking out on the day
When you’re close to me
When you’re close to me

When you’re close to me

Where We’re Headed

–Jim Sink, CEO

I snapped This Pic a few days ago. Jim was afk so he never knew :)

Everyone here at Avatar Reality believes in the potential of immersive high-definition 3D to revolutionize the way we play, learn, and explore online. Given the rapid advancement of computing technology and our nature to want to connect and interact with each other and the things we enjoy, it’s inevitable that a platform will emerge that will make compelling interactive 3D content easy to develop and simple to share. That is our audacious goal for Blue Mars.

To drive the growth and evolution of Blue Mars, we’re focusing on making content in the world easier to find and easier to access. To help people discover and explore the growing world of Blue Mars and the amazing content in it, we’re providing new avenues to link to Blue Mars content directly from the web, building new options for in-world mapping, improving avatar movement, overhauling the Places Browser, providing new control schemes, offering new display and rendering options, simplifying registration, and streamlining downloads.

In addition to the improvements to the client and websites, we are also releasing new updates to the developer tools including a new animation editor and expanded documentation and tutorials. Many of these enhancements are scheduled for our update later this month. Later in the year, we’ll offer the ability to customize private residences as well as new platform wide expansions targeting gameplay, music, and dancing. We’re constantly working to improve the Blue Mars developer and user experience and will continue to release updates to the platform on a regular basis. The ongoing constructive feedback from our passionate user and developer community has been an invaluable resource that has helped us improve Blue Mars and prioritize new feature development.

Beyond direct platform development, we’re working closely with an extremely popular game IP to connect their web content with a new game area inside Blue Mars. In conjunction, we’re also developing a remotely rendered version of Blue Mars that users will be able to stream to their computer without worrying about application installations or 3D hardware and Windows OS requirements. These efforts are designed to attract a wave of new users to Blue Mars who may have never experienced the magic of virtual worlds and 3D games. We look forward to announcing the partnership and demoing a streaming version of Blue Mars in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please join our Twitter feed and Facebook page for the latest news and attractions on Blue Mars.

See you on Mars,
Jim

Arcadia Re-visited

August 26th, 2010

Exciting stuff. The video is self-explanatory. What happened was that I found a hyole and told others. Sister JamT followed and found the old Arcadia. Then they installed a teleporter and we can get in. Sister and Dafney and King went in overland. I haven’t managed that yet. But I will, I will . Heres the vid.

I will be discussing “The Ascent of Man shortly. However here are some pictures :

Virtuality

August 22nd, 2010

And this is how it all began…..

Virtuality is a term used by Ted Nelson for what he considers the central issues of software design. “Virtuality” refers to the seeming of anything, as opposed to its reality. (This has been the dictionary meaning of “virtuality” since at least the 18th century). … and of course we all know who Ted was….
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtuality_(software_design)

Mais , we ‘ave to re-define it methinks…. ike ma sho…

  • Reality is when you get a slap for saying “It’s all an illusion” and say “Ow!”
  • Virtual Reality is a simulcrum and a cipher.
  • Virtuality is when you try to lovehug a female avatar in a virtual world, she slaps you and you say “Ow!”

ok? Btw Paraconsistency Rules.

Thus, paraconsistent logic accommodates inconsistency in a sensible manner that treats inconsistent information as informative.

Transferrable Skills

I have been an explorer since I was 7 years old. I lived opposite Kensal Green Cemetry. It was bounded by a huge wall, 20 feet high running for half a mile. From our bed sitting room on the third floor, I could see over the wall. Here is a quote:

Kensal Green Cemetery is a burial ground located in Kensal Green, London, England. It was immortalised in the lines of G. K. Chesterton’s poem The Rolling English Road from his book The Flying Inn: “For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen; Before we go to Paradise by way of Kensal Green.”

100 yards up the road were huge defunct 20ft by 40ft black iron gates. The struts were as thick as my arm. However about five feet up and a few feet along there was a slight warping big enough for a seven year old boy to squeeze through. Kensal Green Cemetry was my playground until I was 10.

The cemetery is the burial site of approximately 250,000 individuals in 65,000 graves, including upwards of 500 members of the British nobility and 550 people listed in the Dictionary of National Biography. A garden style cemetery, Kensal Green is the oldest of seven private Victorian cemeteries

Explorer Messages : There is probably a way. Don’t be put off by superficialities. If there is not a sign that says “No” , it means you can. It’s usually bigger on the inside. Try again, fail again, fail better.

Notable Things I have got into and been amazed.

  • Castle Cornet in St Peter Port, Guernsey and miscellaneous second world war bunkers 1955 to 1961
  • The Uffizi Gallery in Florence when I was 12
  • France and Spain when I hitch hiked to Lloret de Mar in 1965
  • Rum and Coke (see above)
  • Six months of Profound Toothache resulting in the loss of 75% of my teeth
  • Skiing off very high European mountains. This sorta started my love of mountains. Amongst my favourites are Machupuchari in Nepal (its unclimaeble but I loved looking at it from the top of Sarankot), Mt Fuji, its better seen from a distance but it was there so I climbed it, Mt Halekala in Maui (ssh I drove up most of the way, don’t tell), Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka, wow, and Croghan Hill in Offaly Ireland. (They say its extinct but up in a ballon at 2000ft it looked like a volcano! So I checked it out. Is a Volcano ever extinct ?…. :)
  • The Isle of Wight Festival in 1969. A few hundred of us broke down the barriers and stormed the place. I couldn’t find any gaps to squeeze through. Hendix sorta does that to you. I don’t do that any more. I usually blag a pass
  • I tried to break into Morroco to avoid getting my hair cut. We gave up after a couple of days, but it’s amazing where you can go in a 1949 short wheel base Mark II Land Rover. We got our hair cut as some soldiers in the middle of “nowhere” pointed their guns at us.
  • Hashish (see above)
  • Child care
  • Elgin Avenue Nos 1 to 49. Squatted there for two years. I had this amazing 6ft x 4ft hand carved oak dresser in my Purple and White Georgian apartment. I found it in the local rubbish dump.
  • LSD (see above)
  • A rock in Clydach Vale in the Rhondda. It jutted out from a hillside overlooking the valley which used to fill with mist. I first flew in an aeroplane when I was six months old so I was no stranger to flying in clouds. Never done it without a plane though.

I was 24 and now ready to start exploring properly.

Africa seemed to be promising. I had a bus ticket to Athens and $60 worth of travellers cheques. Seven months later I had done The Nile, met people who had never seen a white person before (thats why I have a black face in Blue Mars, just in case,) , and spent a month exploring the most beautiful desert island in the world called Lamu, and was on a boat steaming across the Indian Ocean from Mombasa to Bombay watching flying fish fly. I was 25. (I had spent my 25th birthday walking across the Sudanese Kenyan border for 26 miles as the rains had washed away the “road” ) I reckon I was an explorer.

Oh, oops, transferable skills? Ok, ike ma sho :

I had explored Arcadia before the boneyards were discovered. When the boneyards were unearthed I literally spent hours travelling the perimeter looking for gaps. I found none. Fail. Then a cave opened up. I explored it. I tested the perimeter for hours. Yes in real time. Fail Again. Then another cave opened up which I explored. I had found the first bone back in May, I was first to explore the new cave. I spent hours mapping it and the whole of Arcadia. The zoom facilities allowed me to do this. I had attached myself to Idtei. (Ok I’ve fancied her for months, since she refused my hug back in Nov ’09), however she was the leading light. I followed her like a puppy dog. She was trying stuff with the zoom and angles and directed me too as well. Fail Again but we were failing better. I think most explorers take short cuts, “the path less travelled” etc. The other thing is eyes wide open at all times. I took a shortcut by jumping off a rock. I won’t say where, its not safe yet. Idtei knows. Anyway I took a shortcut and, as I jumped I glimpsed something. Something underneath where I had jumped. I turned, quickly and clicked on … I went throgh the rock and found myself in complete darkness. Following the Golden Mean as detailed in the hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy I did not Panic!. I clicked into the blackness, running blind, only my fosferescent footsteps showing movement, I seemed to fall and fall and then…..I was OUTSIDE! The sunlight was dazzling and I was in a desert. I looked around and above me there … well it must have been the boneyards embedded in 100ft high sand dunes. I had found the gap and squeezed through. Transferrable skills. When I was 7 I squeezed through a gap in a gate and discovered a new world. I just did it again.

I have spent about three days real time exploring. When I was orientated properly I ran for 15 minutes in one direction did a recce and found running for two minutes in the other direction got me to the research centre. The land was mainly Dunes. Transferrable Skills >

When I was exploring Lamu 200 miles north of Mombasa I heard of a 7 mile crescent beach at the end of the island. I found it. By the time i got there following the path it was time to come back. Hmmm. About a week later I offered to guide a party to the beach. I decided not to follow the coast and go inland. No paths but I had the sun. After a couple of hours the party said it was too much and they turned back. The terrain was rough. I carried on. Found a wild Mango tree with giant ripe mangos. I rested and carried on. Then I came to the Dunes. They were about 100 ft high. You cannot climb sand dunes directly, you slip and slide. You look for the spaces in between each dune. Then you traverse them sideways. I followed the same rules in Arcadia. You look for any plants or rock outcroppings that will give you purchase. I did the same in Arcadia. Here are some pics.

A Map of The Area:

The Otherside of the Barrier

So neh!

I love exploring. Why discrimiate? What is “Real” what is “Virtual”.  Its All Virtuality To Me.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Epilogue

I lay on the beach eating my mango. In the waves breaking over the coral reef. The only way to eat a mango is to smother it in your face and then let a wave wipe your face clean. Repeat until the mango is consumed. A giant mango is preferred. I had found a rocky outcropping overlooking the beach, all seven miles of it. I was alone. I curled up and took a nap. When I woke up it was bright. It was bright because a full moon had risen. Well shame to let the LSD I had stashed go to waste…..;).

I ran and ran down the dunes down to the beach. I waved my stick and took off my longy and waved it around and danced in the moonlight. Then I went down to the sea and danced with a flock (?) of crabs. There were about twenty of them like these :

You see when I ran towards them they scuttled backwards. When I went backwards they came forwards. When I went into the sea they went onto land. When I went onto land they went into the sea. They were great dancers and never got tired.

Flat Fact Lamu : Lamu Island is a part of the Lamu Archipelago of Kenya. Lamu Old Town, the principal inhabited part of the island, is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu has hosted major Muslim religious festivals since the 19th century, and has become a significant center for the study of Islamic and Swahili cultures. The island is linked by boat to Mokowe on the mainland and to Manda Island, where there is an airport. There are no roads on the island, just alleyways and footpaths, and therefore, there are few motorized vehicles on the island. Residents move about on foot or by boat, and donkeys are used to transport goods and materials.

A port was founded on the island of Lamu by Arab traders at least as early as the fourteenth century, when the Pwani Mosque was built. The island prospered on the slave trade. After defeating Pate Island in the nineteenth century, the island became a local power, but it declined after the British forced the closure of the slave markets in 1873. In 1890 the island became part of Zanzibar and remained obscure until Kenya was granted independence from Great Britain in 1963. Tourism developed from the 1970s, mainly around the eighteenth century Swahili architecture and traditional culture.

[Its interesting, I was there in '74 so it was still "new" and I was exploring Ladakh (Little Tibet) in '79 and that had just been opened too. It took us a day and a half to get there by bus. My timing seems to be spot on. Ha! got trapped in Leh for two weeks by a dust storm... but thats another story..Ed]

Lamu Old Town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Notice they don’t mention the beach? It’s MINE! You can see it on the map. The other end of the island. And omgg I was there for Mohammads birthday. We were at the edge of town, Arab Dhows in the harbour down from Saudi. Anyway I joined in the stick dance. Three hours about forty of us in a circle, chanting shuffling from one foot to another. Rythmically. Then one man would move into the centre, and would challenge another who would step into the circle. They would fight. If there were any signs of blood it would be stopped but omgg it was so fucking powerful!!! Sorry but I ended up in a trance… it was wild man, Jesus, thank god I hadn’t taken any drugs….

The Theory Board

Scientific theories are peer reviewed ideas about objects or phenomena for which there is replicable evidence. To use this board you must have a theory that is based on evidence that has been verified by a team of 20 people. At that point it is considered valid evidence. You may use verified artifacts or other theories as evidence. You are also required to use scientific reasoning to explain how the evidence provided supports the stated theory. Your reasoning and evidence will be reviewed by the community-at-large.Theories that garner the most community support will be considered for the yet-to-be-named inaugural Arcadian science awards.

TERC Forms EdGE to Research and Design Educational Gaming Environments
March 5, 2010
‘Martian Boneyards’ game to be first release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAMBRIDGE, MA–EdGE @ TERC is bringing together science educators, researchers, and game designers to capture the spirit of social media and use it to support STEM learning. In partnership with Virtual Space Entertainment, a Bay area-based production company, EdGE is creating the cityscape of Arcadia on Blue Mars—the high-definition, massively multiplayer online (MMO) platform developed by Avatar Reality.
“Our vision is to fill Arcadia with science mystery games that engage the public,” said EdGE director Jodi Asbell-Clarke. “We are striving to create virtual spaces where users of all ages can have a fun and challenging experience while learning collaboratively about topics like evolutionary biology and anatomy. With our first game, Martian Boneyards, we have a unique research opportunity that we hope will lead the way to identifying game elements that promote meaningful science learning.”
Due to be released in late spring 2010, Martian Boneyards will engage players in investigations of bones and other artifacts as part of solving open-ended mysteries about the conditions that led to the creation of the boneyards. Players will collect data, develop theories, and use data mapping and visualization tools to discover what may have unfolded during the early settlement of Blue Mars. During the game experience, EdGE researchers will closely examine what players do to succeed and learn, right down to studying their activity within the game and how long they spend on certain tasks to determine their interest and level of collaboration in science activities. The game development and research are funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation. (DRL-0917520)
Virtual learning enthusiasts can follow the development of the game atwww.edgearcadia.com. The site includes an Arcadia trailer, posts from the game developers, and recent articles on virtual environments.

Martian Boneyards
Principal Investigator: Jodi Asbell-Clarke
Topics: Earth and Space Sciences
The Educational Gaming Environments group at TERC (EdGE @ TERC) and Virtual Space Entertainment (VSE) are developing Martian Boneyards—a game of scientific collaboration in the new high-definition massively-multiplayer online environment (MMO) called Blue Mars.
Martian Boneyards is the first game from EdGE and VSE in Arcadia—a region onBlue Mars dedicated to scientific gaming. Martian Boneyards presents an unfolding story set in the terraformed world of Arcadia with a mystery about how bones and artifacts came together near the outskirts of the region. Players hunt for the bones, compare and sort them, map their data using visualization tools in the science center in Arcadia and then use this evidence to build and revise theories about what may have occurred to leave remnants.Martian Boneyards raises many questions that require scientific investigation and the game rewards players for gathering and analyzing data and eventually using the data of the community to build evidence-based theories about what happened in the boneyards.
Tools and resources available in Martian Boneyards allow players of all ages to explore roles—and thus develop the behaviors and skills—for professions in science-related fields like forensics, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, and even entrepreneurial sectors. Martian Boneyards rewards players for learning and using skills to make theoretical and applicable discoveries. These rewards will enable players to advance career-wise within the game—gaining in-world status as well as STEM expertise in science content and data visualization and analysis, communication, and collaboration technologies.
Martian Boneyards is scheduled to launch in spring 2010. For more information, please visit http://www.edgearcadia.com. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Informal Science Education (ISE) program.
